Leaf Cuttings by Omid Asadi

The delicate Leaf Cuttings by Omid  Asadi are a fascinating form of art. The artist creates his work using carving and cutting techniques on actual fallen leaves using a craft knife and a needle. Unlike paper cutting each part requires a certain pressure to cut and a single mistake can destroy hundreds of hours of work.

“I always try to create pieces with a message, not just beautiful art,” says Asadi. “Some of these messages or ideas come from my world view, poems, stories, global problems and philosophy.”

It was when the artist visited a paper cutting exhibition at the Manchester Art Gallery that he noticed the leaves and started becoming very attentive to fallen leaves. He started seeing them for their own beauty, not just looking at them as a passerby. “I believe that we look at many things everyday, but don’t SEE them,” Asadi says thoughtfully. “For me these leaves represent our life, which is too short,” he adds. “I’m trying to give them another life.”

Asadi mainly uses maple leaves as they can be found easily in the area of Manchester, England where he currently lives. As a child the artist used to draw on the back of rose petals and leaves with a needle and it seems only natural for him to carry on mastering his technique and hone the skills he has been gifted with.

This work was created to support the Persian Cheetah, a species at risk of becoming extinct.

Spending many laborious hours at work, Asadi creates beauty, love and believes in making this world a better for all of human kind and other creatures instead of suffering from wars, conflicts, diseases, hunger, hatred, etc.
