Getting Creative with Nissa Riyas

Nissa Riyas artist on Kobo Art shares the concept and inspiration behind her latest work  with us.

“This painting is influenced by the Buddhist philosophy of mental fettering,” says Nissa.

In particular ‘Fettered’ is inspired by the Abhidhamma Pitaka, last of the three pitakas (baskets). In this collection of Buddhist scriptures there are ten mental fetters that shackle human beings to the cycle of life with suffering. It is by cutting through these bonds and ties that one attains Nirvana.

The ten fetters of the Abhidhamma Pitaka are:

  • Sensual lust
  • Anger
  • Conceit
  • Views
  • Doubt
  • Attachment to rites and rituals
  • Lust of existence
  • Jealousy
  • Greed
  • Ignorance

The ten balls in the painting represent the ten fetters. “I used blue color with dashes of red as blue is synonymous with positivity and tranquility and red associated with conflict,” says the artist.
